In the Gloaming…

Dusk; the hazy boundary between night and day. The air is still and slightly moist. Woodsmoke curls up from the chimney, adding a rural fragrance to the air. In the park, the ground is damp; rich earthy smells rise up into the naked trees. Soggy leaves carpet the footpath, still retaining their rich autumnal colours. A pink hue spreads across the darkening sky. Blackbirds call out across the fading light, bidding goodnight to each other, in my romanticised worldview. Dogs snuffle through the shrub layer, picking up the scent of a fox here and a moorhen there. The only people out and about are the two of us and a couple of dog walkers. We admire a spaniel’s collar with its flashing lights; his owner tells us he plans to get flashing deely-boppers next. We have a little chuckle as we head home to glowing embers in the fire place, the smell of pumpkin stew, and warming mugs of amaretto coffee… I look forward to more precious afternoons like this…
